John was born in Friona in the Texas panhandle. He attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, followed by Yale University, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies, and then UT Law School. John clerked on the Texas Supreme Court, spent two years practicing law in Dallas, and then moved to the Austin firm of Graves, Dougherty, Hearon & Moody, where he has practiced since 1978. He specializes in oil, gas, and energy law. John serves on the Executive Committee.
