Thirty-three years ago, Allan Haskell, an Art from the Streets artist, graduated from New York’s Stony Brook University with a B.A. in political science. Five months later he suffered his first psychotic break. After traveling the country and living with a mental illness, he eventually made his way to the ARCH.
Here, a Front Steps case manager recognized that Allan needed supportive services and put Allan’s name on the list for the soon-to-open Garden Terrace Residences. Allan, with only a pack on his back, moved in during March of 2003. With the ongoing support of a case manager, Allan was able to thrive in a healthy and supportive community. Allan had been quoted as saying, “Boarding homes are just a place to exist, but Garden Terrace is a place to live.” Though Allan passed away in 2009, we are happy that we were able to provide him with a pathway home where he was able to feel safe and secure.
