Kathy Palmer-March Volunteer of the Month
We would like to highlight our Volunteer Month- Kathy Palmerll! The kindheartedness and dedication that Kathy demonstrates through volunteering at Front Steps relates to her 29 years of teaching Elementary, Middle, and High School students. After growing up in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, she got her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio Dominican University. She has three grown children with her husband of 36 years, Lutheran Pastor Herb Palmer, and humorously remarks that her kids actually once believed the stories of their mom going by the name “Swamp Angel” while having to wrestle alligators in Florida to raise money for college.
She is now retired and, since July, has been volunteering weekly at the Mail and Hygiene Desk on Tuesdays during staff meetings. Her reliability and enthusiasm as part of the Front Steps community is also seen in her work with in-kind donation drives, particularly for our new women’s group CIRCLE. On why she decided to volunteer with Front Steps, Kathy explains that she had a brother who was homeless, and that “homelessness is something that affects us all in one way or another…the center of our life should not be ourselves, but others.” Kathy says that the most enjoyable part of the week is when she gains wisdom and inspiration from the people she serves at the ARCH. She explains that “the clients at ARCH can see the joy in very simple things and they know each day is a gift. I am humbled by their understanding of just what is important in life.” Aside from her work in helping to restore hope to our homeless neighbors, Kathy loves to spend time with her family and friends most, while also enjoying walking, reading, and watching sunsets. For her compassionate dedication to Front Steps and our clients, not to mention her hard work and weekly commitment, Front Steps is pleased to honor Kathy Palmer as our Volunteer of the Month! |
