March’s Volunteer of the Month
Shane B.!

This month Front Steps would like to honor Shane B, as our Volunteer of the Month for March! Shane is one of our Circle of Care Mentor volunteers. The Circle of Care Mentor program matches mentors with formerly homeless individuals involved in our Permanent Supportive Housing program. The Circle of Care Mentor program is designed to help individuals with the difficult transition of moving away from old support systems from the streets and shelters and into housing and forming a new support system.

Shane has always been an active volunteer since the time he was in college. Before moving to Austin served as a Regional Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as volunteering as a Big Brother. Shane feels called to serve and care for people in need, and thought Front Steps would be a perfect place to volunteer. In Shane’s free time he enjoys music, movies, the Muppets, and even hosts 2 podcasts. Shane has learned that individuals’ motivations are hard to judge, and just because you see a person on the side of the road holding a sign you probably do not know what they are thinking. Shane recognizes and wants to point out that every person, including those experiencing homelessness, are fighting a daily battle, and “things we take for granted like eating a meal and staying warm (or cool) takes a huge effort”. As a Circle of Care Mentor Shane helps support a formerly homeless individual with their “daily battle”.
